Selinunte Founded in the middle of the 7th century B.C. by settlers from Megara Hyblaea, near Syracuse,Selinunte was florid, populous and rich with its own mint. It stands on a hill surrounded by two rivers, the Modione and the Cottone on whose banks grew wild parsley (Selinus, hence the name Selinunte) . After another territorial conflict with segesta, Selinunte was sieged and defeated by the Carthaginians. At the end of the 3rd century BC the Carthaginians razed it to the ground to avoid it falling into Roman hands. The exceptionality of Selinunte is the vast quantity of its ruins. Since 1993 Selinunte is an archaeological park visited by thousands of people every year.
Segesta Founded by the Elymi in a flat area, Segesta with Erice and Entella was one of three main townsof the above-mentioned people becoming famous for its sulphurous and curative springs. Here we can appreciate two lovely work of art: the Doric temple and the Greek theatre. West of the pancient settlement, the big temple appears yet today perfectly preserved . The interior is roofless, and is penetrated by a light cut by the columns whose shadows interweave on the ground. At the eastern extremity, there is the Greek theatre, facing north and looking in the direction of the Gulf of Castellammare, the marine horizon can be made out on clear days. In summer the Greek theatre hosts successful plays.
Erice An ancient medieval village with Elimy roots, Erice was a powerful and rich city. Destroyed during the First Punic War by the Carthaginians, Erice was conquered by Romans that restored the temple of Venus Ericina at the expense of the Romans taxpayers. There is no trace now of this temple, according to Diodorus, it stood on the ancient acropolis where in the 13th century the Norman castle was built.
Motya Founded by Phoenicians around the end oh 8th century, Motya early achieved wealth and well being. The word Mothya might be “spinning mill”, indeed it seems it was famous for the production of cloths dyed with the red of molluscs that were abundant there. In the 6th century, the rivalry with the Greek colonies led Motya to be circled with walls. Despite this, they were unable to stop the assault lead by Dionysious of Syracuse who razed the city to the ground . Motya was rediscovered by Giuseppe Whitaker, of whom the museum was dedicated, in wich, among other things, there is the biggest collection of Phoenicians-Punic objects in Sicily. But the most precious archaeological findings is “the MotyaYoung Man”, a life size marble statue, thatf. Vincenzo Tusa points out, is symbol of the encounter between the Greek and Phoenician –Punic civilisations
